Knutsen NYK Carbon Carrier (KNCC) has gained approval in principle (AiP) from ClassNK related to a floating liquefied storage unit (FLSU), co-developed with NYK and ENEOS Xplora.

The AiP covers the design of a liquefied CO2 carrier (LCO2-EP carrier), which employs the elevated pressure (EP) method to store and transport the liquefied CO2 at ambient temperature.

ClassNK performed its review in accordance with the Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships, 'Part N'.

KNCC developed the LCO2-EP Cargo Tank technology to transport LCO2 in a stable state. According to the company, there is no need to cool LCO2 to cryogenic temperatures, which makes handling more straightforward, and the EP method can potentially lead to lower energy consumption during liquefaction.

The FLSU combines this technology with the Isenthalpic expansion cooling and liquefaction process. The vessel liquefies and temporarily stores CO2 that has been collected onshore and transported as gas, making it suitable for onward transport by the LCO2 carrier.
