CNOOC reinjecting CO2 at Bozhong oil field offshore China
CNOOC has begun production from the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield development offshore eastern China.
According to the company, Bozhong 26-6 is the world’s largest metamorphic buried hill oil field with in-place oil and gas of more than 200 MMcmoe.
The project is located in central Bohai Bay in average water depths of about 20 m. Facilities include a new central processing platform and an unmanned wellhead installation, with plans for 22 production wells, 10 gas injectors and one water source well.
Output should reach a peak later this year of about 22,300 boe/d.
CNOOC says the development started up three years after discovery. This is also a demonstration site for carbon capture and storage (CCS), with associated CO2 extracted from the produced light crude and reinjected back into the formation to support oil recovery.
About 1.5 MMt of CO2 should be reinjected throughout the project’s lifespan.
CNOOC President Yan Hongtao added, “It bolsters the company’s energy supply capacity and low-carbon development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Bohai Rim regions.”
Last year CNOOC said it achieved net production during the third quarter of 542.1 MMboe, 8.5% up on the corresponding quarter in 2023. In China, the increase came mainly from oil and gas fields, such as Bozhong 19-6 and Enping 20-4. At the time, the company also started production from seven new development projects, including Bozhong 19-2 oil field, Liuhua 11-1/4-1 oil field secondary and Shenhai-1 Phase II natural gas.
