MHI, SBM Offshore subsidiary conducting CO2 capture study for Petrobras
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will conduct a study with Single Buoy Moorings Inc., a subsidiary of SBM Offshore, on the application of CO2 capture modules on future FPSOs for Petrobras.
The module design is based on a combination of MHI's Advanced KM CDR process CO2 capture technology and SBM's Fast4Ward FPSO concept. The study will examine the capture of CO2 emitted by gas turbines onboard the FPSOs, with a view to future commercialization.
It represents the first deliverable of the partnership agreement signed between MHI and SBM in September 2023.
MHI has been developing the Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery (KM CDR) process and the Advanced KM CDR process with Kansai Electric Power Co. since 1990, and it has to date delivered 18 plants featuring these processes.
Advanced KM CDR uses the KS-21 solvent, which is said to offer technological improvements compared with the amine-based KS-1, better regeneration efficiency and lower deterioration.
The process has delivered energy savings, lower operational costs and low amine emissions, MHI added.
