DELFT, the Netherlands — Allseas will lay the subsea pipeline for the Porthos carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Port of Rotterdam.
Porthos, a partnership between EBN, Gasunie and Port of Rotterdam Authority, will transport 2.5 MM metric tons/year of CO2 from industrial sites in the port area over a 15-year period to depleted gas fields in the Dutch North Sea for permanent storage up to 4 km subsurface.
Allseas will start offshore construction work in 2025, which will include installation, burial and commissioning of the 16-inch CCS pipeline between a compressor station on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam with the P18-A platform 20 km offshore.
The S-lay vessel Lorelay will install the pipeline with support from Allseas’ Oceanic vessel. Both can position precisely and safely in the busy waters around Rotterdam, the company added.
Porthos, which is due to be operational by 2026, is designed to cut the Netherlands' annual CO2 emissions by about 2%.
The EU has designated Porthos as a “project of common interest” in meeting climate targets and awarded a €102-million ($107.9 million) subsidy for the development.
