Cable and pipe penetration specialist Lycab is finding growing acceptance for the pre-lubricated seals it introduced last year. "Clients report a 20-50% time saving on installation, with a proportionally greater saving on more complicated installations," says technical manager Roy Olsson. With a typical installation time of 40-50,000 man-hours on large platforms, that adds up to a substantial economy in both time and cost.

The product, part of Lycab's MCT Brattberg range, and for which a patent is pending, is also cleaner to handle, making life easier for the installation technicians.

The phased process of introducing pre-lubricated seals is now almost complete, with the latest order coming from the Pacific region. In the North Sea, the new seals have been installed on the Troll Gas and Heidrun platforms.

The market is also showing a preference for the PTG presswedge over the end-packer and compression plate, Olsson says. These parts are used to fill spare space in the penetration frame.

Use of the presswedge simplifies the task, as it involves one part instead of two, and can be placed at top or bottom of the frame, or between rows of insert blocks, whereas the end-packer can only go at top or bottom.

The wedges are so arranged that simple tightening of the two bolts provides well distributed compression of the contents of the frame. The fully certified presswedge is available for standard size frames in 60 and 120mm.

Meanwhile Lycab's RGPH high-pressure pipe sealings have been installed at either end of the pipeline bundle for BP's Cyrus development. The four sealings of 200mm diameter - two at either end - provide protection for the interior packing of the bundle, which contains a total of nine pipes and cables. The same product, which is approved for pressures up to 40 bar, has also been supplied for use on Canada's Hibernia development.

The RGPH is partnered by Lycab's RPG pipe sealing for standard pressures, with approval from DnV and Lloyd's Register.

Lycab has now started production of transit sleeves and has added the steel frames for the transit to its product line. These can be welded or bolted into place. A number of sales have been made to projects in the UK and Norway.
