HUNTERSTON, UK— NORTH Ayrshire Council Planning Committee has granted XLCC full planning permission for its HVDC subsea cable manufacturing venture in Hunterston, western Scotland.
Construction will start early next year, with first cable production expected in 2026. Consultants Pick Everard have provided management and design support for the project,
Development of the brownfield site will create a new UK industry that will support 900 jobs in the area by 2025, with thousands more predicted for the wider supply chain.
Demand for high-voltage cables is set to increase sixfold over the next seven years, XLCC believes, as more countries look to expand their sources of renewable energy.
The company’s first order is for four 3,800-km long cables to connect solar and wind renewable power generation facilities in the Sahara region to the UK for the Xlinks Morocco-UK power project.
