One fatality following North Sea helicopter crash

A crew member onboard one of Bristow Group’s search and rescue helicopters has died after it crashed near Bergen on the Norwegian west coast.

STAVANGER, Norway — A crew member onboard one of Bristow Group’s search and rescue (SAR) helicopters has died after it crashed near Bergen on the Norwegian west coast.

The aircraft was on a training assignment for Equinor ’s SAR service for the Oseberg area in the North Sea.

All onboard were on assignment for Equinor, which is cooperating with the authorities and Bristow Norway on the handling and follow-up of the incident.

At present, the cause of the accident is not known. Equinor has acted to halt all regular flights on the Norwegian Continental Shelf out of consideration for those affected, and also to gain an overview of the situation.

It aims to restore normal helicopter services soon.

According to Bristow, the helicopter, registration LN-OIJ, had six crew members onboard, and was involved in an accident during a training exercise roughly 15 nautical miles west of Bergen.

All other personnel onboard have varying levels of injuries. The company has mobilized its incident response team and added that it was contacting and providing assistance to family members of those on the flight.
