ZUG, Switzerland – The Nord Stream consortium has published a project information document (PID) concerning a proposed extension. Currently, two parallel trunklines take gas from fields in northern Russia through the Baltic Sea to northern Germany.
Nord Stream plans to discuss plans for national and trans-boundary environmental impact studies with Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. The proposed extension project would involve adding one or two more pipelines crossing the waters of the five countries. Others potentially affected are Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
The PID allows all parties concerned to determine their role in the future environmental and social impact assessment and associated permitting processes, in accordance with their countries’ laws and regulations.
After completion of construction ofLines 1 and 2, environmental/social monitoring studies suggested that any construction-related impacts were minor, locally limited, and chiefly short-term, the consortium says.
