OSLO, Norway — DNV is supporting National Gas Transmission (NGT) by expanding the hydrogen pipeline research facility FutureGrid in Cumbria, northwest England.
The UK’s OFGEM awarded NGT two Strategic Innovation Funded (SIF) projects to research the suitability of existing assets for transporting hydrogen through the UK’s national transmission system.
In 2021 DNV began construction of a high-pressure hydrogen test center at the Spadeadam research and test facility in Cumbria.
The FutureGrid Phase 1 project, commissioned in September 2023, operated with 2% hydrogen blended with natural gas. The aim is to blend 100% hydrogen by the end of January 2024.
FutureGrid Phase 2 (compression, deblending and purification) is the first of various planned steps toward converting the national transmission system to transport hydrogen and involves developing a compression and pipeline test facility at Spadeadam.
This will enable offline testing of the full compression system and should help demonstrate that a safe and cost-effective transition to hydrogen is feasible.
DNV will support NGT in developing a hydrogen deblending, purification, and refueling facility at the site, with DNV responsible for designing, installing and operating the infrastructure.
