OSLO, Norway — Equinor has made a small oil discovery with a new well on the Svalin Field in the North Sea.
The Deepsea Aberdeen semisub drilled well 25/11-H-1 H in production licence 169, encountering oil in thin sandstone layers (<3 m) with good reservoir quality in the Balder Formation.
According to the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, early findings suggest up to 0.6 MMbbl recoverable. The licensees will assess whether the find is sufficiently commercial to warrant development.
The Svalin Field, proven in 1992 in Palaeocene to early Eocene sandstone in the Heimdal and Balder formations, has been in production since 2014. It comprises the Svalin C structure, developed with a subsea template tied back to the Grane platform, and Svalin M, which produces through a multi-branch well drilled from the same facility.
