STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Norway expects to increase reserves at its Alta-Gohta oil discoveries in the southern Barents Sea, following a successful appraisal well 7220/11-5 and extended production test on Alta.
The semisubmersibleLeiv Eiriksson drilled well 7720/11-5 on license PL609 and performed the subsequent two-month test, with production exported via a flexible flowline to the tanker Teekay Scott Spirit for onward delivery to the Mongstad oil terminal on Norway’s west coast.
Main aims were to demonstrate sustainable production rates and reduce uncertainty over recovery from the Permian-Triassic karstified and fractured carbonate reservoirs for a future development.
The well, drilled 700 m (2,296 ft) horizontally through the oil zone, encountered all targeted reservoir intervals with reservoir properties better than anticipated. Fluid losses along the way were successfully managed, confirming the technical viability of a development with horizontal wells.
For 30 days of the test the constrained rate was around 7,500 b/d, and the subsequent 25-day program flowed up to 18,000 b/d, constrained by the surface production facilities. In total the test generated around 675,000 bbl.
Results indicated strong reservoir productivity with contribution from all reservoir intervals and connectivity to a large volume.
Prior to the test the estimated resource range forAlta and Gohta discoveries was 115-390 MMboe, but this will likely increase now with the uncertainty range reduced. Lundin plans to integrate the new well data with results from a 3D seismic survey (TopSeis) over the entire Alta and Gohta area.
It will also progress commercialization studies for Alta to determine any additional appraisal drilling needs and the optimal development concept. The current plan is for a subsea development connected to a standalone floating production and storage vessel, possibly taking in Gohta in nearby PL492.
Lundin’s partners in PL609 are DEA Norge and Idemitsu Petroleum Norge.
TheLeiv Eiriksson rig will next drill exploration well 6307/1-1S for Lundin on the 193-MMboe Silfari prospect in PL830 in the Froan basin area of the Norwegian Sea. The Frøya High/Froan basin area is previously undrilled, and Lundin has acquired substantial acreage over this region under recent licensing rounds.
The well’s location is roughly 40 km (25 mi) south of the Draugen and Njord fields and 30 km (18.6 mi) southeast of the Fenja field. Main goals will be to test the reservoir properties and hydrocarbon potential of the Permian and Jurassic formations - in the event of a positive result, there are multiple follow-on drilling opportunities.
Drilling should last around 100 days.
Alex Schneiter, president and CEO of Lundin Petroleum said: “Our exciting organic growth program is delivering results with five successes out of six wells drilled so far this year. We now have a pipeline of five appraisal projects moving towards development, creating the opportunity for upside beyond our ‘do nothing’ production growth outlook.”
