ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Romania Ltd. and OMV Petrom have encountered natural gas in the first deepwater exploration well in the Romania sector of the Black Sea.
The Domino-1 “is encouraging, but it is too early in the data evaluation and exploration process to speculate” on commerciality, say the operators.
Domino-1 is in the Neptun block, 170 km (106 mi) offshore in water about 1,000 m (3,281 ft) deep.Drilling started at year-end 2011 and is ongoing. The total depth of the well is expected to be more than 3,000 m (9,842 ft) below sea level.
Neptun covers 9,900 sq km (3,822 sq mi) in water depths ranging from 50 m to 1,700 m (164 ft to 5,577 ft).
