CALGARY, Canada – TAQA Energy (Abu Dhabi:TAQA)  is preparing to drill an exploration well this spring on the Contender prospect in the UK northern North Sea, according to partner Antrim Energy.

Contender is in the Kerloch license P201 covering block 211/22a North West Area. TAQA acquired a 60% interest and assumed operatorship of the southern sub-area containing Contender, in exchange for agreeing to drill an exploration well.

It will drill the well from its Cormorant North platform, targeting the Jurassic Brent sequence of sandstones at a projected drilling depth of 16,900 ft (5,151 m), just under 2 km (1.2 mi) east of the Cormorant North field.

Antrim has a 30% stake in license P1784 block 21/7b in the Central North Sea, north of the Greater Fyne area. The block contains the Cyclone and Typhoon Tertiary Cromarty prospects at respective subsurface depths of 5,000 and 5,600 ft (1,524 and 1,707 m).

The company acquired the license jointly with operator Premier. The companies plan to drill a well on Cyclone this summer, with a probable follow-up well on Typhoon in the event of a discovery.
