LONDON– Genel Energy says the JM-1 well offshore Morocco has confirmed oil at the upper Jurassic level in the Cap Juby prospect.
Drilling of the current well on the Juby Maritime license, 2 km (1.2 mi) from the 1968 MO-2 discovery well, started in January.
Presently JM-1 is at a subsurface depth of 3,100 m (10,170 ft) with 600 m (1,968 ft) to drill to the prognosed mid-Jurassic primary target.
Elsewhere off Morocco, Genel plans exploration wells this year on the Sidi Moussa and Mir Left licenses using the semisubmersibleNoble Paul Romano. On Sidi Moussa, the most likely target is the Nour prospect.
InMalta’s offshore Area 4, Genel has a 75% operated interest. The company and its partner are initially targeting a potential extension of the proven Tertiary play offshore Tunisia into Maltese waters.
They plan to drill a well on theHagar Qim prospect around the end of this month.
There may also be a deeper Cretaceous play, thought to be the northern extension of the prolific Sirte basin onshore Libya. The partners plan additional analysis of reprocessed seismic to assess prospectivity in sub-tertiary intervals.
