STAVANGER, Norway  Equinor and its partners have achieved a second oil and gas discovery in their latest drilling campaign close to the Johan Castberg Field development in the Barents Sea.

The Transocean Enabler semisubmersible drilled the Skavl Stø exploration well 7220/8-3, 5 km south-southeast of the original Castberg discovery well 7220/8-1, and 210 km northwest of Hammerfest, in production license 532.

Equinor estimates recoverable reserves from the latest find in the range of 5 MMboe to 10 MMboe.

The company and partners Vår Energi and Petoro will consider tie-in options Skavl Stø, along with the Snøfonn North discovery, announced in late May, and Isflak (2021) and Skavl (2014).

Transocean Enabler will next drill development wells on the Goliat Field in the Barents Sea for operator Vår Energi.

The Johan Castberg Field center is in 360 m to 390 m water depth, and it comprises the Skrugard, Havis and Drivis discoveries, with combined recoverable volumes of 450 MMboe to 650 MMboe.

In April the FPSO reached Norway and is anchored at Aker Solutions’ quay on Stord, where the turret and processing modules are undergoing installation, followed by hookup, commissioning and testing.

The vessel is designed for 30 years’ service, with a production capacity of 190,000 bbl/d.
