LONDON – The drillship Maersk Voyager has spudded the Venus-1X exploration well in 3,000 m (9,842 ft) water depth offshore southern Namibia.

TotalEnergies operates the surrounding block 2913B (Petroleum Exploration License 56) in partnership with Impact Oil & Gas, QatarEnergy, and NAMCOR.

Siraj Ahmed, CEO of Impact, said the block partners had been working to mature and drill the Venus prospect since 2014. “Venus-1X is a world-class, basin opening well which, if successful, could be transformative for Namibia.”

PEL 56 covers an 8,215-sq km (3,172-sq mi) area. Impact entered the license as operator in 2014, acquiring 2D and later 3D seismic data which defined the Venus prospect.
