OSLO, Norway – Wintershall Dea has found small volumes of oil with its latest well in the Norwegian Sea.
Well 6611/1-1 was the first on license 896, awarded under Norway’s APA 2016 round.
The semisub West Hercules drilled it in 357 m (1,171 ft) water depth, 150 km (93 mi) northeast of the Equinor-operated Norne field FPSO and 150 km southwest of the coastal town of Bodø.
According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the well penetrated 7 m (23 ft) of oil-bearing sandstone, not yet dated, within the assumed Jurassic sequence. Early analysis suggests less than 1 MMcm of oil, which would not be profitable to develop in this remote location.
The West Hercules will next drill well 31/5-7 in license 001 for Equinor.
