MOSCOW – Rosneft has discovered oil with its first prospecting and appraisal well on the Vostochno-Pribrezhny license block offshore Sakhalin Island.

The company’s drilling contractor RN-Burenie drilled the well from shore, to an MD of 3,047 m (9,997 ft); the vertical deviation was 1,450 m (4,757 ft).

Rosneft designed the well to have two holes with S-shaped paths in order to optimally access all the targets in what the company described as difficult geological conditions. Geophysical studies in the open hole confirmed the oil saturation of productive formations.

Preparations are under way to test the well in casing. Early analysis suggests a resource of up to 2 MM metric tons of oil (2.2 MM tons).

Rosneft’s geologists had previously assessed the resource potential across the area at 11 MM metric tons (12.12 MM tons).

The Vostochno-Pribrezhny license block is in the Nabilsky Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk. The license was awarded in December 2016.
