EDINBURGH, UK – Cairn Energy has agreed to farm into 35.1% of four exploration blocks offshore Nicaragua’s Pacific coast.

Operator Equinor may start exploration drilling in 2020. Cairn sees this as potentially high-impact frontier acreage with a range of exploration play types.

During the second half of this year, Cairn will participate in six wells targeting more than 800 MMbbl of gross resources, five as operator. Three will be offshore Mexico. The first, due to spud in 3Q, will likely be on block 9, followed by a second well on the block in 4Q (rig contracts are in both cases), and finally, a non-operated well in block 7.

In the Norwegian sector, the company will operate wells on the Lynghaug and Godalen prospects, and in the UK North Sea, Cairn plans to drill the Chimera structure.
