ABERDEEN, UKCentrica has contracted Sparrows Group to refurbish two offshore cranes on the Morecambe gas field in the East Irish Sea.

The 27-year-old cranes are located on the DP6 and DP8 platforms off the coast of Lancashire and Cumbria in northwest England.

Centrica is investing up to £60 million ($77.3 million) to overhaul the two platforms and boost overall gas production at Morecambe Bay.

Sparrows duties include removal of each crane from the platforms and their transfer onshore for full refurbishment prior to re-installation.

CEO Stewart Mitchell said: “A full refurbishment will enable these well-used and aging cranes to operate reliably and safely. With many aging installations in UK waters, we often assist operators to decide the most effective way to plan their lifting requirements for life extension and decommissioning stages.”

The scope involves several engineering disciplines including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, structural, and automation and control.

All components and machinery will be refurbished, repaired, upgraded or replaced, with inspection, testing and recertification undertaken to ensure compliance with safety standards.
