Offshore incident results in death of drillship crewmember

Noble Corp. has confirmed 'incident involving loss of life' on its drillship offshore Malaysia was an employee of a third-party contractor.

An offshore incident last week resulted in a rig crewmember passing away onboard the Noble Viking drillship. Jefften Peter was a Control Union contractor who was onboard the rig, which was performing drilling operations offshore Miri, Malaysia. 

According to Peter's Facebook page, he was a lead specialist mechanical inspection services employee as well as a rope access technician with Control Union. 

Details about the incident or cause of death have not been disclosed by Noble or Control Union.

Sources told Offshore on April 8 that an "investigation team will join the vessel soon and will be looking for all possible details to capture."

Upon reaching out for comment, Noble provided the following statement to Offshore:

"Noble can confirm that an incident involving loss of life occurred on the drillship Noble Viking in the early morning of April 2, 2025. The deceased person was an employee of a third-party contractor. 

All relevant authorities were immediately notified. 

Noble is providing support to the Noble Viking crew at this difficult time and wishes to express its condolences to the family of the deceased."

In addition, a Control Union spokesperson told Offshore: 

“We can confirm that a Control Union employee was involved in a fatal accident onboard a mobile offshore drilling unit in Sarawak waters on 2 April 2025. We are continuing to support the employee’s family at this difficult time.

As this remains an active investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”
