ARLINGTON, Texas – Oil States Industries, Inc. (OSI) says that it will provide its deepwater minerals riser system to Allseas for deployment on its deepsea nodule collection vessel the Hidden Gem.
The project includes the design and manufacture of a deepwater riser system to collect polymetallic nodules in the extremely remote Pacific Ocean Clarion Clipperton Zone. These nodules contain high concentrations of minerals utilized in electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and other systems which support the energy transition.
RiserTec, an independent division of OSI, performed the system engineering and global riser analysis. Dr. John Shanks, Principal Engineer, RiserTec, said: “We are pleased to have met the challenge of designing a system capable of reaching the extreme water depth of 6,000 meters, which is 2,000 meters beyond the reach of conventional oil and gas riser systems.”
OSI says that its Merlin connection technology is at the core of the riser system. The Merlin system recently won a Spotlight on New Technology Award by the 2021 Offshore Technology Conference.
