WINDHOEK, NamibiaAzinam and its partners have contracted the deepwater drillship Ocean Rig Poseidon for exploration drilling on the PEL 71 license in the Walvis basin offshore Namibia.

The first well will target the potential 459-MMbbl Prospect S, testing multiple zones.

Azinam Managing Director David Sturt said: “The primary objective of the well is to test Cenomanian-Turonian age clastics within a structural trap with this same reservoir already proven by the Murombe well drilled to the north by HRT in 2013. Additionally, it will test deeper secondary objectives within the Albian and Aptian formations.”

Prospect S is one of five dip-closed structural traps in a cluster within an Upper Cretaceous turbidite clastic fairway, with combined prospective resources estimated at 1,758 MMbbl.

In addition, there are two higher-risk stratigraphic traps in the license that could hold 885 MMbbl combined.

According to Azinam, both would be de-risked through improved calibration of 6,100 sq km (2,355 sq mi) of 3D seismic data, applying results from the Prospect S well.

“Our modern broadband 3D seismic database has been crucial in enabling us to map these basin floor fan complexes, which historically have been hard to identify from poorer quality datasets,” Sturt said.
