SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – Eni has discovered gas in the Calypso prospect offshore southern Cyprus.
The Calypso 1 NFW well was drilled in 2,074 m (6,804 ft) water depth inblock 6, reaching a final TD of 3,827 m (12,556 ft).
It encountered an extended gas column in Miocene and Cretaceous rocks: Eni stressed that the Cretaceous sequence has high-quality reservoir characteristics. Detailed data collection followed (fluids and rock samples).
This result, the company added, confirms the extension of the ‘Zohr-like’ play in the Cyprus exclusive economic zone,Zohr being the giant gas discovery in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean Sea.
Eni and partner Total plans further studies to determine the in-place gas volume range and to delineate further exploration and appraisal activity.
