TORTOLA, Virgin Islands – The jackup Aban VII has completed drilling the Karamah#1 well in block 50 offshore Oman, with hydrocarbon shows in several stratigraphic zones.
According to partnerMasirah Oil, an extensive logging program throughout the target intervals proved the presence of a working petroleum system in the block.
However, an incident on the rig resulted in an open hole for a prolonged period of time with some loss of circulation. This likely caused the formation to be invaded with mud, making it inaccessible for subsequent wireline sampling.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 3,320 m (10,892 ft), 21 km (13 mi) east of the port of Duqm in a water depth of 23 m (75 ft). The location was roughly 13 km (8 mi) from theGAS-1 discovery well.
The main aim was to explore multiple horizons of the early Tertiary and late Cretaceous formations.
