CONSTANTA, Romania – The mobile offshore drilling rig GSP Saturn left Constanta last week and transited the Bosporus strait en route to the Tuzla shipyard in Turkey. In order to pass under the Bosporus Bridge, which imposes a maximum height of 55 m (180 ft) for transiting vessels, and also to pass over subsea cables, the rig’s derrick and legs were removed partly and transported to the yard by boat.
GSP Saturn, operated by GSP Drilling, will now prepare for a series of drilling contracts in the Mediterranean Sea.
Another GSP-owned vessel, the DSV/ROV support shipGSP Prince, was due to sail out of Constanta over the weekend and start operations for the Olympia project in Russian waters later this week. The DSV vessel, carrying a new Triton XLR ROV, will perform subsea survey operations in support of pipelay operations.
Heading in the other direction last week was the C Master pipelay barge which was transported from Tuzla to Constanta Sud - Agigea Port. Here the vessel is preparing for the Olympia pipelay program. That includes addition of a stinger to allow installation of 20-in. (51-cm) diameter pipes. C Master, built in 2004, has to date laid a total of 800 km (497 mi) of pipelines in the Persian Gulf, according to GSP.
