Mermaid Subsea Services (UK) has plug and abandoned (P&A) 30 wells across the UK North Sea using the Island Valiant vessel.
The company claims this sets a new benchmark for vessel-based well decommissioning operations completed in a single year within the region.
Among the projects was a 21-well P&A campaign for an unnamed operator and completion of a first-stage program for Shell UK, with further phases to follow in 2025 and 2026.
“Recent research from Offshore Energies UK found that operators need to plug 200 abandoned North Sea oil and gas wells a year to stay on top of targets," said Scott Cormack, regional director for Mermaid Subsea Services (UK). “If the sector is to achieve this, it will require the market to deliver innovative decommissioning models…”
Mermaid has since agreed to charter the Island Valiant vessel for another season, supported by a dive vessel that is due to enter the North Sea arena in 2025.
