TALLINN, Estonia --Aker Arctic Technology in Helsinki is designing a new concept icebreaker vessel for the Estonian Maritime Administration.
Under the $8.86-million contract, Aker also will provide basic design, preparation of tender documents required for the construction procurement process, and construction supervision.
The multipurpose icebreaker will be 108 m (354 ft) long with a breadth of 28 m (91.8 ft), and will be able to break 1.2 m (3.94 ft) thick level ice forward and astern at a speed of 3 knots. Due to its novel stern design, Aker claims, it will also move smoothly through heavy ice ridges.
The vessel will be equipped with oil spill combat, firefighting and towing equipment, and offshore equipment for use in other applications during ice-free periods.
Following the award of construction contracts later this year, Estonia aims to have the vessel in service in time for the winter 2010/2011 season.
