PARIS/OSLO, Norway — Marlink has upgraded the smart hybrid VSAT installation on PGS’ seismic acquisition vessel Ramform Hyperion to provide an uplink speed of more than 250 megabits per second (Mbps) using GEO VSAT.

This allowed the transfer of seismic data from the vessel to the onshore headquarters for processing in real time.

The Marlink team’s technical solution comprised a 1.5-m VSAT antenna, enabling the transfer of 2.7 terrabytes of data from the ship to the shore in 24 hours. Over the longer term, the arrangement should lead to an average upload capacity of more than 230 Mbps from the vessel.

The company achieved this using its network of GEO satellites, the focus being on delivering data at the required speed specifically to shore. The trial was designed to assess the performance of VSAT services in a dynamic maritime environment, taking into account signal stability, latency and adaptability to varying weather conditions.
