LEIDEN, the Netherlands  Heerema Marine Contractors’ construction vessel has crossed the Storebaelt Bridge at the opening to the Baltic Sea.

This is the first time a Heerema crane vessel has entered the region, with access made possible by crane alterations to allow passage below the bridge. When the vessel was ballasted down to its maximum draught, the total air draught was just under 65 m with the A-frames down.

During the vessel’s stay in the Port of Rotterdam last winter, modifications took place to the A-frames; the hingable corners can accommodate the NOV-designed semi-permanent adjustment system.

The vessel’s lifting capacity remains unchanged at 14,200 metric tons.

Heerema used the new system to lower the cranes and fold the A-frames to form a sufficient air gap when combined with ballasting between the vessel and the Storebaelt Bridge.

Heerema Fabrication Group's Opole Yard constructed about 150 metric tons of structures for the modification.

Upcoming installation work for the company includes the 7,150-metric-ton Baltic Eagle Offshore Substation for Baltic Eagle GmbH and 27 wind turbines for Parkwind's Arcadis Ost I wind farm using the company’s rotor nacelle assembly installation method.
