BERGEN, Norway — Volstad Maritime has commissioned Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) to provide a battery pack and associated control system for battery charging on the Grand Canyon II offshore construction vessel.
NES has a similar program of work for sister vessel Grand Canyon III.
Sales manager Egil Bremnes said, “Managing identical deliveries for two sister vessels, more or less in parallel, will allow the yard, shipowner and us to capitalize on learnings and production benefits that can enable reduced project execution risk, time and cost.”
The latest delivery will coincide with an upgrade to the Grand Canyon II next year. The battery pack will to be installed in a container below the deck, which will allow for thorough testing of the equipment prior to delivery and a shortened yard stay.
Grand Canyon II is 127.5 m long and 25 m wide with a 250-metric ton offshore crane. It is one charter to Helix Energy Solutions until 2027.
In June, Volstad also contracted NES to supply a battery pack and control system for the subsea construction vessel M/S Volantis.
