BERGEN, Norway  Volstad Maritime has commissioned Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) to supply a battery pack and associated control system for battery charging to the Grand Canyon III offshore construction vessel.

NES will provide the equipment in connection with the vessel’s scheduled upgrade in early 2023.

Earlier Volstad Maritime asked the company to supply a similar package for the Volantis subsea construction vessel, but for installation in dedicated battery room. The battery pack for Grand Canyon III will be housed in a container below the deck.

“Delivering the battery system in dedicated containers will allow us to conduct extensive testing of the equipment prior to delivery,” said NES’ Egil Bremnes. “This means that the yard stay can be shortened correspondingly, allowing the vessel to return to operation as quickly as possible.”

Grand Canyon III is 127.5 m long and 25 m wide and is equipped with a 250-metric ton offshore crane. It is preparing for a five-year charter with Helix Energy Solutions.
