ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands — Van Oord’s new cable-laying vessel Calypso is sailing to the Vard Brattvaag yard in Norway for construction completion following its launch last week at the Vard Tulcea shipyard in Romania.
The DP2 vessel, the company’s second cable-layer for the offshore wind sector after the Nexus, should be operational from the end of 2023.
Calypso, which is 131 m long and with a beam of 28 m, will be equipped with one carousel on deck and one below-deck cable carousel, providing a total cable-carrying capacity of 8,000 metric tons.
It will be deployed mainly to install an inter-array grid and export cables including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. Van Oord’s cable trenchers can also be operated from the vessel.
Calypso is designed to run on biofuel, with engines designed to accommodate future developments in e-fuels. It will have a large battery pack, a shore supply connection and an energy management system that should lead to substantial reductions in CO2, NOx and SOx emissions, the company added.
