ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands – The Ulstein-designed JSD 6000 pipelay derrick and heavy-lift vessel was recently launched at the ZPMC Qidong shipyard in China.

After 18 months construction will continue at the ZPMC Changxing base for further activities up to sea trials and delivery stage.

The JSD 6000 vessel is the third customized version of the ULSTEIN SOC 5000 design after the Seven Borealis and Aegir. It is also the second version classed by Lloyd’s Register.

The design features an NOV revolving main crane with a 5,000-metric ton lifting capacity. According to Ulstein Design & Solutions BV, what makes this vessel unique is the combination of a 600-metric ton Remacut S-lay system via a center firing line below main deck, and a 2,000-metric ton IHC EB J-lay system via a moonpool. This double deck configuration allows for a large, unobstructed deck area and below deck pipe fabrication.

The heavy-lift, S-Lay, and J-Lay via large, off-center moonpool capabilities will allow the DP vessel to serve deepwater and SURF projects as well as shallow-water EPCI projects.

On April 24, 2018, Petrofac signed an agreement to sell the JSD 6000 to Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC). Petrofac will provide technical support for the construction of the vessel, which is expected to be completed in 2022.
