SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – The hull of the Coral Sul FLNG has been launched at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, according to Eni and the Area 4 partners.
The FLNG facility is part of the Coral South project in Area 4 of the deepwater Rovuma basin off Mozambique.
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture S.p.A. (MRV), an incorporated joint venture owned by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% interest in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. Galp, KOGAS, and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos E.P. each hold a 10% interest 4. Eni is leading the construction and operation of the FLNG facility on behalf of MRV.
The hull is 432 m (1,417 ft) long, 66 m (217 ft) wide, and weighs about 140,000 tons. Its eight-story accommodation module, which will house up to 350 people, is also ready to be lifted and integrated with the hull system. Fabrication activities are also under way for the 12 gas treatment and LNG modules, with all main equipment ready for integration and first deck stacking executed.
With a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per year, the Coral Sul FLNG will be the first FLNG unit ever deployed in deepwaters, at water depth of about 2,000 m (6,562 ft), and the first purpose-build FLNG in Africa. Drilling and completion activities for the six subsea wells that will feed the liquefaction unit are ongoing offshore Mozambique.
According to Eni, the Coral South project is more than 60% complete and is in line to start production by 2022.
