Ocean Winds, CRIST Offshore ink offshore Poland substation agreement
What is an offshore substation?
Offshore substations play a key role in the infrastructure of offshore wind farms. The energy generated by turbines at sea is delivered to these substations, where it is converted and transmitted to land.
*Definition by Ocean Winds
Ocean Winds has signed an agreement with CRIST Offshore Sp. z o.o. for the design, construction and commissioning of an offshore substation for its BC-Wind offshore wind farm in the Polish Baltic Sea.
This is the first agreement of this type concluded with a Polish supplier under the so-called TIER 1. Ocean Winds (a 50:50 joint venture by EDP Renewables and ENGIE) says the cooperation confirms the readiness of Polish companies to implement technologically advanced projects in the area of renewable energy sources.
The offshore substation, which will be built by CRIST Offshore at their shipyard in Gdynia, is in the design phase. It will be equipped with all offshore primary electrical equipment for the project and will weigh about 2,000 tonnes. The offshore installation of the offshore substation is planned for mid-2027, and it will provide employment for more than 400 specialists.
As part of the project, the energy generated by the turbines will be transported via an internal cable network to a station in the Baltic Sea and then exported through an underwater cable to a land station in the Choczewo municipality.
In early February, Cadeler signed a vessel reservation agreement with Ocean Winds concerning installation of about 30 wind turbine generators at the BC-Wind project. The company will allocate one of its O-class vessels, with work due to be completed in 2028.
BC-Wind, with a capacity of up to 500 MW, is situated 23 km from the coast, north of the Pomeranian Voivoideship. It also marks Ocean Winds' first project in Poland.
