RWE will use Thyborøn Port as the offshore construction base for its Thor wind farm development in the Danish North Sea, 22 km from western Jutland, according to a Nov. 8 news release.
It will host the project’s service vessels and the control center for managing marine logistics and traffic during offshore construction. The port will also handle steel structures during the foundation installation campaign, which starts next spring.
For this activity, Buss Ports will lease and operate a 100,000-sq-m area and quay alongside in the southern part of the port.
Günther Fenle, project director for Thor at RWE, said, “Thyborøn Port will provide us with the necessary facilities and port infrastructure, while Buss Ports will manage the port logistics. Thyborøn will be home to the Thor team for more than two years as they manage all construction activities.”
Recently, the Danish Energy Agency awarded RWE the construction permit for installation works at sea. Early in 2025, the company will prepare the seabed for the foundations, with installation of the 72 wind turbines set to start in 2026 from the port of Esbjerg.
Half of the turbines will feature CO2-reduced steel towers with 40 also incoporating recyclable rotor blades. Once construction has ended in 2027, RWE will operate and maintain the wind farm from the port of Thorsminde.
