North Sea Thor wind farm given construction go-ahead

Nov. 4, 2024
Thor should be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has authorized RWE to start construction of the Thor offshore wind farm off the Njissum Fjord in the North Sea.

Thor, with 72 x 14-MW turbines, will be the country’s largest offshore wind development. Currently Denmark has 17 operational offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of about 2.7 GW.

Aside from the 266-m-tall wind turbines, the offshore facilities will include a transformer platform and associated submarine cables.

The turbines will be installed across a 200-sq-km area, 22 to 34 km from the port of Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. Half of the turbines will feature CO2-reduced steel towers and 40 will have recyclable rotor blades.

RWE plans to perform the turbine installation works out of Esbjerg, with Thorsminde serving as the operations and maintenance base. In addition, construction of RWE’s new service building should get underway by year-end 2024.

Thor should be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The DEA has also issued tenders for a further 6 GW minimum of offshore wind by 2030.
