UK university takes Kongsberg simulator for floating offshore wind studies

HORTEN, Norway – Kongsberg Digital and the University of Plymouth in southwest England are collaborating on a simulation development targeting the UK’s floating offshore wind sector.
They aim to provide offshore wind project teams and crews with capabilities to verify, test, and optimize installation and maintenance projects.
A Kongsberg dynamic positioning simulator will shortly be installed at the university’s campus to support studies, mission planning, training and assessment of crew, allowing various offshore scenarios to be evaluated and optimized.
The system will be used to simulate, test and optimize marine operations throughout the lifecycle of floating offshore wind installations.
It will also be used to develop training for current and future industry professionals.
The simulator was acquired through the university’s involvement in the Cornwall FLOW Accelerator project, led by Celtic Sea Power and supported by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Programme.
The project will support the county of Cornwall’s ambitions to take a lead role in the global floating offshore wind sector.
Britain’s national Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Test facility, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, is also based within the University’s COAST Laboratory.
