Cerulean Winds has invited Bilfinger to join an alliance developing the Aspen, Beech and Cedar floating offshore wind farms in the UK central North Sea.
Bilfinger will provide operations and maintenance (O&M) for the 3-GW development.
Once built, Aspen, Beech and Cedar will comprise more than 300 turbines. First to be developed will be the 1-GW Aspen.
Bilfinger will advise on O&M during the detailed design of the Aspen site, facilitating opportunities to adopt technologies before delivering the O&M services once the development is built.
Cerulean Winds signed three floating wind exclusivity agreements under Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round.
Each of the three floating wind farms will be located within 100 km of each other and will be connected together to form an offshore ring main around platforms in the Central North Sea.
A high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission will provide availability and redundancy to maximize generation uptime. The scale is also said to enable offtake to other parts of the North Sea through a new high-voltage direct current (HDVC) network.
Cerulean Winds’ ultimate goal is to create a North Sea Renewables Grid, which would be a basin-wide green power generation and transmission system supplying energy to established oil and gas facilities, allowing their owners to comply with the UK government’s emissions reduction targets.
