NEW ORLEANS – The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will offer about 121,875 sq mi (315,655 sq km) in a region-wide lease sale scheduled for Nov. 18, 2020.

Lease Sale 256 will include all available unleased areas in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sale will include about 14,755 unleased blocks, located from 3 to 231 mi (5 to 372 km) offshore, in the Gulf’s Western, Central and Eastern planning areas in water depths ranging from 9 to more than 11,115 ft (3 to 3,400 m).

Scheduled to be livestreamed from New Orleans, this will be the seventh offshore sale under the 2017-2022 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program.

In addition, BOEM is offering a 10-year primary term in water depths of 2,625 ft (800 m) or deeper. The change means that leases in water depths of 2,625 ft to 5,249 ft (1,600 m) will start out with a primary term of 10 years, without the need to earn an “extension” of the primary term to achieve the full 10 years.
