PERTH, Australia – Petrofac will complete Phase 1 of the decommissioning process for the FPSO Northern Endeavour offshore northern Australia.

The 274-m (899-ft) long vessel, currently not producing oil, is moored between the Laminaria and Corallina oil fields, 550 km (342 mi) northwest of Darwin.

Australia’s Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources awarded the contract, which could be worth up to AUD$325 million ($236 million).

Petrofac will serve as outsourced operator responsible for decommissioning and disconnection of the FPSO from its subsea equipment, and temporarily suspending the wells.

The company and local partners, including Monadelphous and Linch-pin, will manage the program and all activities in consultation with the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA), to ensure compliance with safety and environmental protections.

The Government assumed responsibility for decommissioning of the FPSO following the liquidation of vessel’s owners, the Northern Endeavour, the Northern Oil and Gas Australia (NOGA) group of companies in 2020.

Phase 2 will involve permanent plugging and well abandonment, while Phase 3 will focus on removal of subsea infrastructure and remediation of the Laminaria and Corallina fields.
