ASKER, Norway – Miros Group will supply eight oil spill detection (OSD) systems to Petrobras under what the company claims is the world’s largest x-band radar-based OSD surveillance and response contract to date.
It will deliver and commission the equipment in partnership with Ulstein Belga Marine, the scope including radars and thermal imaging cameras for Petrobras’ Mobile Offshore Production Units in theCampos basin.
The award follows an agreement this February between Petrobras and Brazil’s federal environmental agency, Ibama, which commits Petrobras to adopting recently enhanced Ibama standards for controlling oil discharge in water.
Miros OSD is said to provide continuous day and night automatic oil spill detection and alerts via a combination of x-band radar, thermal imaging, AIS vessel tracking, and gyro-stabilized daylight and infrared cameras.
Systems are deployed on offshore installations, vessels or shore-based stations, either as standalone units or as a part of a sensor network.
The functions have been verified in oil-on-water exercises and have been proven to guide spill response operations in actual oil spill incidents.
