OSLO, Norway -- Talisman Energy has won authorization to extend the use of Varg field production facilities in the Norwegian North Sea beyond their design life. The consent, issued by Petroleum Safety Authority Norway, applies through 2021 for the wellhead platform Varg A and the risers, pipelines, and subsea systems connecting Varg A to the FPSO Petrojarl Varg.

The approval for use of thePetrojarl Varg only applies until 2013, but Talisman plans to submit a new application for a life extension of the floater following a new classification exercise.

Teekay Petrojarl Production operates the facilities on Talisman’s behalf. The field was discovered in 1984, but production only started in 1998.

The original anticipated design life was 15 years for the pipelines and platform, 10 years for the wells and platform process equipment, and eight years for the FPSO process kit. Since the mid-1990s, when the development plan was submitted, reserve estimates have repeatedly been raised following the drilling of new wells, new and improved reservoir models, and application of new technology.
