LERWICK, UK – Lerwick Harbour on Shetland, northern Scotland, has begun operation ahead of schedule to support a North Sea subsea project.
Work on an 80-m (262-ft) section of the quay under development at Greenhead was sped up to make it available for use by Technip for Maersk’sGryphon Area Reinstatement Program. The Gryphon FPSO had to be taken off station after severe weather caused the facility to break free of its moorings.
Technip will install 15 dynamic risers, two dynamic and two static umbilicals, 11 flexible flowlines, and subsea equipment. The company will use Lerwick Harbour as its main offshore support base during the project.
Early completion of the 9-m (29-ft) water depth new quay - Berth Seven - enables Technip to bring in a hired 1,250-metric ton (1,378-ton) capacity Sarens crane erected on a heavy-lift pad incorporated into the quay.
At the end of last month, the coasterAbis Belfastarrived at the port to deliver the first consignment of subsea equipment reels. Earlier this week the ROV support vessel, Fugro Symphonyberthed at the new quay to collect the first of the reels, weighing up to 270 metric tons (297 tons) each, for installation on the Gryphon field.
Logistics and marine service companies Peterson SBS and GAC Shipping are also providing support to Technip from local bases.
The remainder of the 100 m-plus (328 ft) quay at the south end of the Greenhead Base is due to be completed this month.
