NEW DELHI, India – ONGC’s Bassein field and satellite asset offshore western India has achieved 200 bcm (7 tcf) of cumulative gas production after over two decades in operation.
Initially, the field was expected to attain a peak production rate of 20 MMcm/d (706 MMcf/d), and to start declining by 2010 after cumulative output of 180 bcm (6.4 tcf). Recently, however, Bassein was delivering 29 MMcm/d (1 tcf/d) – ONGC attributes the sustained performance to sound reservoir management practice and timely inputs in terms of wells, wellhead platforms, process platforms, and first- and second-stage compression facilities.
The field contributes nearly 43 % of ONGC’s gas production. Recent studies suggest its life could be extended for another 20 years. Bassein’s gas is used by nine power plants, seven fertilizer plants, two refineries and two petrochemical plants, and also heads to northern India via the Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur pipeline.
