LONDON – The Oil & Gas Methane Partnership has awarded Neptune Energy Gold Standard status.

This is said to be in recognition of the company establishing targets and credible plans to attain net zero methane intensity by 2030. To achieve Gold Standard companies must outline clear measures for cutting methane emissions by 45% or more and report their progress annually.

According to Neptune, the United Nations’ inaugural International Methane Emissions Observatory report highlighted its 2025 methane emission intensity target of 0.0015% as being the most ambitious of all the oil and gas companies participating in the process.

Neptune’s vice president Operations Europe, Pete Jones, said: “We already have one of the lowest methane intensities in the sector, at 0.01%, compared with the industry average of 0.23%, and want to go further, with a target of net zero methane emissions by 2030.

The announcement follows a recent collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund to measure methane emissions on the company’s Cygnus gas platform in the UK North Sea.

Fixed wing and rotary drones were deployed, equipped with methane-sensing equipment, with the aim of establishing an accurate, scientific benchmark for measuring total methane emissions within an offshore environment.
