STAINES, UKSpirit Energy has committed to a £13-million ($16.9-million) investment program to extend the life of the York gas field in the UK southern North Sea by three years.

York, 34 km (21 mi) from the northeast Yorkshire coastline, produced first gas in 2013 and has so far delivered 45 bcf. It was originally expected to cease operations in 2020.

However, the recently approved extension project, aimed at maximizing the field’s economic recovery, will prolong production until 2023/24 and develop a further 18 bcf of gas.

Spirit plans to phase the works during 2020-2021, with activity offshore and onshore, including platform and control system modifications, onshore tie-ins, and an intervention on the Y1 well.

York’s gas will be re-routed from Easington to the Dimlington Gas Terminal, in order to access the latter’s onshore gas compression facility.
