PARISTotal and Qatar Petroleum will jointly take over operatorship of the Al-Shaheen offshore oil field this Friday from Maersk Oil for a 25-year period.

Al-Shaheen produces 300,000 b/d. The North Oil Co. (NOC), a partnership between Total (30%) and Qatar Petroleum (70%), will operate the concession.

Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of Total, said: “NOC will leverage its technical capabilities to optimize the exploitation of the complex Al-Shaheen oil field.

“Total is fully committed to the development of its partnership with Qatar Petroleum both in Qatar and internationally, and is willing to further expand its cooperation in particular with new projects in Qatar.”

Al-Shaheen, 80 km (50 mi) north of Ras Laffan, started production in 1994. Development to date has involved installation of 30 platforms and 300 wells, with the output representing around half of Qatar’s oil production.

This summer, NOC will start a new development, the first phase of which will comprise 56 new wells, to be drilled by two rigs, with a third rig joining at the beginning of next year.

Two more development phases will follow over the next five years.
