COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Maersk Oil North Sea UK has awarded Heerema an engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the wellhead platform for the Culzean ultra-high-pressure/high-temperature gas field in the central UK North Sea.

Heerema Hartlepool in northeast England will build the wellhead access deck and access ways, with Heerema Vlissingen in the Netherlands constructing the jacket.

Maerks expects sailaway of the completed structure ahead of the start of drilling, which is planned for 2Q 2016, subject to the partners taking a final investment decision in 2015.

Hercules Offshore will drill the wells using a newbuild heavy-duty jackup.

Priti Patel, the UK’s Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said: “The Culzean project has the potential to meet around 5% of UK gas demand in 2020/21, and would not be possible without the government’sultra-high pressure/high-temperature cluster area allowance… Oil & Gas UK estimates the government’s allowances directly incentivized £7 billion [$11.28 billion] of investment last year.”

Maersk operatesCulzean in partnership with JX Nippon and Britoil (BP). It forecasts plateau production in the 400-500 MMcf/d (10.2-14 MMcm/d) range.

Water depth is 88 m (289 ft) and the reservoir is around 4,300 m (14,107 ft) below sea level.
